Certified Hypertension Specialist (CHS)

The Certified Hypertension Specialist (CHS) is a physician who has demonstrated mastery of a defined body of knowledge relating to hypertension. S/he has expert skills in and knowledge of the management of clinical hypertension and related disorders, especially as it relates to complex and difficult to treat cases.

Certified Hypertension Specialists often act as local consultants for more challenging cases and provide advice regarding guidelines and process improvements. To date, the designation has been granted to approximately 1,500 physicians practicing in the United States, Canada, and internationally.

CERTIFICATION ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates from the United States and Canada:

By the application deadline, candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be a currently licensed physician in the United States or Canada
  • Be certified by a relevant primary care board – American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or equivalent (e.g., Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Pediatrics, Obstetrics-Gynecology)
  • Meet at least one (1) of the following:
    • Certified by a relevant sub-specialty board – ABMS or equivalent (e.g., cardiovascular disease, nephrology, endocrinology)
    • Current enrollment in an accredited relevant fellowship program (e.g., cardiovascular disease, nephrology, endocrinology)
    • Demonstrate appropriate experience and practice activity in the management of complex hypertension problems (e.g., letter from Chief of Service or other recognized senior physician)
  • Complete Attestation of Current Appointment Form by Chief of Department or Division
  • Complete and file an Application
  • Pay the required fee

Candidates from Countries other than the United States and Canada:

By the application deadline, candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be a currently licensed physician
  • Be certified by a relevant national or U.S. primary board – American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or equivalent (e.g., Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics-Gynecology)
  • Meet at least one (1) of the following:
    • Certified by a relevant secondary national or U.S. subspecialty board – ABMS or equivalent (e.g., cardiovascular disease, nephrology, endocrinology)
    • Current enrollment in an accredited relevant national or U.S. fellowship program (e.g., cardiovascular disease, nephrology, endocrinology)
    • Demonstrate appropriate experience and practice activity in the management of complex hypertension problems (e.g., letter from Chief of Service or other recognized senior physician)
  • Complete Attestation of Current Appointment Form by Chief of Department or Division
  • Complete and file the Application
  • Pay the required fee

REDESIGNATION PROTOCOL

Certified Hypertension Specialists who were designated on the basis of passing the  AHSCP CHS examination will need to redesignate after the ten (10) year designation period  expires by re-applying for and passing the CHS examination.
